Memorial Day Weekend Tribute Show - 05.29.11 Playlist

What a wonderful Memorial Day Tribute Show!  Had a great time playing some wonderful old vinyl tracks from the 1950-1960s.  Some amazing finds!*

Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day.  In 1868 General Logan declared May 30th the day designated for the purpose of decorating the graves of soldiers who died in defense of their country.  These memorials were already popping up spontaneously, as evident in this song composed by Nella Sweet in 1867.  It was necessary to have one day set aside to allow the collective nation to mourn, especially after the Civil War where the soldiers were buried in our own soil.  Here is the lyrics to the song composed by Nella Sweet:

Kneel Where Our Loves Are Sleeping
Dedicated to The Ladies of the South who are decorating the graves of the Confederate Dead

Kneel where our loves are sleeping, Dear ones days gone by,
Here we bow in holy reverence, Our bosoms heave the heartfelt sigh.
They fell like brave men, true as steel, And pour’d their blood like rain,
We feel we owe them all we have, And can but weep and kneel again.

CHORUS
Kneel where our loves are sleeping, They lost but still were good and true,
Our fathers, brothers fell still fighting, We weep, ‘tis all that we can do.

Here we find our noble dead, Their spirits soar’d to him above,
Rest they now about his throne, For God is mercy, God is love.
Then let us pray that we may live, As pure and good as they have been,
That dying we may ask of him, To open the gate and let us in.

CHORUS
Kneel where our loves are sleeping, They lost but still were good and true,
Our fathers, brothers fell still fighting, We weep, ‘tis all that we can do."

Words by G.W.R. Music by Mrs. L. Nella Sweet, 1867

The Best Buttermilk Pancakes Recipe - Ever. Amen.

Mmm...mmm...fluffy, golden, heavenly puffs of sweet cake...in a pan.
Great to take camping this summer.

BEST BUTTERMILK PANCAKES RECIPE:

Ingredients:

1 egg
1-1/4 c buttermilk or 1 c buttermilk & 1/4 c milk
2 Tbl melted butter
1 c flour
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp sugar

Directions:

Melt the butter in a medium-sized bowl.  Add egg, whisk briskly, then add the buttermilk and mix together.  Measure the remaining dry ingredients together on a paper towel (to eliminate additional mess) or in a separate bowl.  Add dry ingredients to the egg mixture and whisk just enough to moisten together.  Do Not over mix!  There will be lots of lumps, but they will cook out.

Lightly butter a large skillet or preheated electric griddle (350 degrees F).  Wipe down the skillet/griddle between each batch with a paper towel, otherwise your batter will slip all over!  Turn pancakes when surface bubbles begin to break.  (You can place finished pancakes in the oven at warm or low setting until you have completed cooking enough to serve everyone at once).  Serve immediately.

Variations:

Blueberry or Strawberry Buttermilk Pancakes:  Stir in 1 cup fresh blueberries or fold 1 cup thinly sliced strawberries into batter just before cooking.

Apple Buttermilk Pancakes:  Fold in 1 cup chopped apple into batter.

Peanut Butter Pancakes:  Blend 1/3 cup creamy style peanut butter into batter.

4 Servings.

Just left the station with a box full of Gospel cds to listen to and find some treasures to share with the Treasure Valley!  That's the beauty of community radio - you can bring your music in to add to our evolving library so we can broadcast great music on the air.  If you have any music to donate (love vinyls and love any gospel!) email music@radioboise.org and they will give you instructions on where to drop them off.

Tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo - First Thursday - and a forecast of 79 degrees!  Lots of things to do in the downtown area, but would love to see you out at Radio Boise.  The Alaska Building is hosting an open house (1020 W. Main St.) so stop by and check us out.

Make sure to tune into my special Mother's Day broadcast this Sunday - May 8th.  I'll be playing some Big Mama Thornton, Mama Burks, and great songs celebrating Mamas!  Have a wonderful rest of your week and I'll catch you Sunday - 10am - noon.
