Listening to the Gospel Brunch makes you GENEROUS!

...It must!!  Because you are such a giving, amazing community - I'm so proud to share Sunday mornings with you.  Thank you - you are wonderful for supporting Community Radio - what fantastic things can come from people sharing music and information from the goodness of their heart!

Here is our playlist from today's show.  We had a BEAUTIFUL and breathtaking live performance of Hillfolk Noir playing gorgeous gospel spirituals.  Boise's own Hillfolk need to be experienced live, bringing all the elements that bring us appreciation for nature and humanity.  To watch it in our new performance room at KRBX and hearing it through the headphones was an amazing experience.  They're authentic.  And credible.  And speak of now.  Hillfolk noir may sound like music passing through wooden, metal and stringed exhales of voices still lingering in the soil of Idaho's past, but they are very much in the present moment.  And today was a great day.

Thanks, Travis, Ali, Jared & Mike!  My only regret is I didn't get to spend more time talking with you.  I hope you will come back and talk gospel with me.  Gospel music, that is.

Radiothon at Radio Boise has been a wonderful experience for me.  Support Community Radio - wherever you are.  Every town should have a place that provides vital information to its community.  I treasure ours.  Call 208-258-2072 or go online to donate at www.radioboise.org.

Great things underfoot at Radio Boise!!

This is my favorite time of the week...prepping for my show!  I am always looking for great Gospel music to share with you.  We are local programmers at Radio Boise so I hunt around town at our local thrift stores for music.  I give money to St. Vincent's, Idaho Youth Ranch, Salvation Army, Goodwill, Calvary Chapel - so many great places! - while purchasing Gospel music.  There's something so right about that combination.

Another way I harvest my material is through local contributors who want to share with the public library here at the station.  If you have any music you'd like to share (for any music show) that make you think, "now this would be perfect for so-and-so's show" - bring it on down to KRBX 89.9 FM. Make sure to put the program's name, DJ name, or genre of music.  You can also mail it to:

Radio Boise - KRBX 89.9 FM
1020 W. Main St, Suite 50
Boise, ID 83702

We'd love to hear what you have to say - what you would like to hear - so keep in touch, Treasure Valley.  We're YOUR local, community radio station.  Thanks for listening!

Okay, now back to the music...you're gonna LOVE Sunday's show!!

9/11 Remembrance Ceremonies in the Treasure Valley

12:00 pm -   Homedale Community Park, across from the high school
The American Legion will host an event to remember those lost on
9/11/2001

1:00 pm -   10th Annual 9/11 Freezeout Hill Ceremony in Emmett

Hosted by the American Legion Post 49.  Idaho’s Lt. Governor, Brad Little, will be the guest speaker.  The Boise Highlander’s Bagpipes and Drums will be performing along with Boise music performer, Dan Adkins.  A vintage plane flyover will take place.  The Emmett Police and Firemen will be conducting the flag ceremonies and the Veterans of Idaho Honor Guard team will conduct a 21 gun salute.

3:00 pm -    9/11 Concert of Peace and Remembrance
First United Methodist Church, 717 N. 11th St

4:00pm       A Tribute on the Statehouse Steps

The event is sponsored by the Treasure Valley and will honor members of law enforcement, fire and rescue service, the armed forces and all who protect our lives and property by putting their lives on the line on a daily basis.  Organizers say over the 10-years since 9/11, more than 70 Idahoans have been killed in the line of duty (including those serving with a branch of the military in Idaho) with numerous others permanently disabled and carrying the scars of their service.  While members of the military, law enforcement, fire and rescue service do not consider themselves ‘heroes’ there are many in our communities who recognize the toll their service takes on those who protect Americans – overseas and at home.

6:30 pm     City of Caldwell 9/11 Memorial service

Memorial Day Weekend Tribute Show - 05.29.11 Playlist

What a wonderful Memorial Day Tribute Show!  Had a great time playing some wonderful old vinyl tracks from the 1950-1960s.  Some amazing finds!*

Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day.  In 1868 General Logan declared May 30th the day designated for the purpose of decorating the graves of soldiers who died in defense of their country.  These memorials were already popping up spontaneously, as evident in this song composed by Nella Sweet in 1867.  It was necessary to have one day set aside to allow the collective nation to mourn, especially after the Civil War where the soldiers were buried in our own soil.  Here is the lyrics to the song composed by Nella Sweet:

Kneel Where Our Loves Are Sleeping
Dedicated to The Ladies of the South who are decorating the graves of the Confederate Dead

Kneel where our loves are sleeping, Dear ones days gone by,
Here we bow in holy reverence, Our bosoms heave the heartfelt sigh.
They fell like brave men, true as steel, And pour’d their blood like rain,
We feel we owe them all we have, And can but weep and kneel again.

CHORUS
Kneel where our loves are sleeping, They lost but still were good and true,
Our fathers, brothers fell still fighting, We weep, ‘tis all that we can do.

Here we find our noble dead, Their spirits soar’d to him above,
Rest they now about his throne, For God is mercy, God is love.
Then let us pray that we may live, As pure and good as they have been,
That dying we may ask of him, To open the gate and let us in.

CHORUS
Kneel where our loves are sleeping, They lost but still were good and true,
Our fathers, brothers fell still fighting, We weep, ‘tis all that we can do."

Words by G.W.R. Music by Mrs. L. Nella Sweet, 1867

The Best Buttermilk Pancakes Recipe - Ever. Amen.

Mmm...mmm...fluffy, golden, heavenly puffs of sweet cake...in a pan.
Great to take camping this summer.

BEST BUTTERMILK PANCAKES RECIPE:

Ingredients:

1 egg
1-1/4 c buttermilk or 1 c buttermilk & 1/4 c milk
2 Tbl melted butter
1 c flour
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp sugar

Directions:

Melt the butter in a medium-sized bowl.  Add egg, whisk briskly, then add the buttermilk and mix together.  Measure the remaining dry ingredients together on a paper towel (to eliminate additional mess) or in a separate bowl.  Add dry ingredients to the egg mixture and whisk just enough to moisten together.  Do Not over mix!  There will be lots of lumps, but they will cook out.

Lightly butter a large skillet or preheated electric griddle (350 degrees F).  Wipe down the skillet/griddle between each batch with a paper towel, otherwise your batter will slip all over!  Turn pancakes when surface bubbles begin to break.  (You can place finished pancakes in the oven at warm or low setting until you have completed cooking enough to serve everyone at once).  Serve immediately.

Variations:

Blueberry or Strawberry Buttermilk Pancakes:  Stir in 1 cup fresh blueberries or fold 1 cup thinly sliced strawberries into batter just before cooking.

Apple Buttermilk Pancakes:  Fold in 1 cup chopped apple into batter.

Peanut Butter Pancakes:  Blend 1/3 cup creamy style peanut butter into batter.

4 Servings.

Just left the station with a box full of Gospel cds to listen to and find some treasures to share with the Treasure Valley!  That's the beauty of community radio - you can bring your music in to add to our evolving library so we can broadcast great music on the air.  If you have any music to donate (love vinyls and love any gospel!) email music@radioboise.org and they will give you instructions on where to drop them off.

Tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo - First Thursday - and a forecast of 79 degrees!  Lots of things to do in the downtown area, but would love to see you out at Radio Boise.  The Alaska Building is hosting an open house (1020 W. Main St.) so stop by and check us out.

Make sure to tune into my special Mother's Day broadcast this Sunday - May 8th.  I'll be playing some Big Mama Thornton, Mama Burks, and great songs celebrating Mamas!  Have a wonderful rest of your week and I'll catch you Sunday - 10am - noon.
